Collage Project

Indigenous Beings

For my third project, I used my own photography from Ecuador. Last July, some friends and I volunteered at an indigenous school in the capital city of Quito for three weeks. The amount of time that we spent there was a life changing experience that taught us a tremendous amount about the spirituality and beautiful culture of the Kichwa- the direct descendants of the Inca Empire. This piece represents the Kichwa's organic culture and rustic roots that have been altered by Spanish colonialism. I incorporated some Hindu-aspects to this piece, like the multiple arms and animal head, in order to portray these indigenous people as "higher-beings" - people on different levels of the human cautiousness. Since this is a collage project, I think adding the variations of limbs and body parts made it more visually intricate.
